AMERICA’S FIRST SELF-GOVERNED TOWN FOR FREED SLAVES

Mitchelville, established during the Civil War on Hilton Head Island, stands as a remarkable testament to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. It was founded by escaped slaves created a selfgoverning town on the former Drayton Plantation grounds before the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863. Under Union General Ormsby Mitchel’s guidance, Mitchelville was structured with orderly streets, wooden homes, a church, and allowed its inhabitants the freedom to govern themselves. Citizens actively participated in governance through elections, enacted laws, collected taxes, and named their town “Mitchelville” in honor of General Mitchel. Notably, Mitchelville implemented a compulsory education law for children, likely the first of its kind in the South, showcasing its commitment to progress and inclusivity.
